Guide for authors

This guide explains what JCAII publishes, which reporting standards apply, and what to include in your manuscript.

Draft for editorial approval. Requirements on this page may change before submissions open.

Submitting your article

Our online submission system is being set up and will be announced here. Until it opens, please send a short pre-submission enquiry to the editorial office with a working title, the article type and a 250-word summary. We will tell you whether the work is likely to be in scope.

Article types

TypeWhat it is
Original researchEmpirical studies of AI implementation, evaluation or governance, including trials, prospective cohorts, quasi-experimental designs, qualitative and mixed-methods studies, and economic evaluations.
Implementation reportA structured account of a real deployment: context, the AI system, how it was integrated, what was measured, and what did and did not work. Negative and mixed experiences are welcome.
ReviewSystematic, scoping and narrative reviews on implementation, evaluation or governance of clinical AI.
PerspectiveArgued commentary on policy, practice or method. Usually invited; unsolicited proposals are welcome.

Reporting guidelines

Please follow the reporting guideline that matches your study design and upload the completed checklist with your submission. Most are available from the EQUATOR Network; the AI-specific ones are summarised in our guidelines hub.

Preparing your manuscript

Alongside the usual title page, structured abstract, main text and references, every research article and implementation report should describe:

  • The AI system: name, version, developer, intended use, input data, output, and regulatory status (for example CE marking class or FDA clearance).
  • The setting: the institution type, country, care pathway and patient population.
  • Integration: how the output reached clinicians, what actions it was meant to prompt, training provided, and who was responsible for the system.
  • Monitoring: how performance, safety and usage were tracked after deployment, and any changes made to the model or its thresholds.

Declarations

Please include the following statements at the end of the manuscript:

  • Author contributions, using the CRediT taxonomy
  • Funding, including the role of any funder
  • Competing interests, including financial or advisory relationships with AI developers or vendors (see our conflicts of interest policy)
  • Ethics approval and consent, or the reason they were not required
  • Data and code availability (see our data policy)
  • Use of generative AI in preparing the manuscript (see our AI use policy)
